Today we are celebrating the foundation of the group we have today, namely the original Supremes (Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard).

On December 5-18, 1966, The Supremes began recording a guest spot on the NBC TV Special entitled “Ice Capades Special 1967.”  The show was hosted by Jimmy Durante and was filmed in Rochester, New York.  It aired the following February 13, 1967.

OMG I was there!!! This is the FIRST time I've ever seen anything about the Ice Capades taping. I met them all because I hung around at their hotel for four days! Is there a way I could get photos? Or any other information?? Linda DiStefano

I hit internet gold today! I was there!! I've NEVER seen anything in print about this. Most of my Supreme friends know the story of me hanging around the Downtowner Motor Lodge from Saturday til Tuesday in December 1966 when the Supremes were in town taping the Ice Capades Special. I found out about it when the disc jocked on WBBF talked about it on a Saturday morning on the air. I quickly got on the bus to the airport because they were supposed to fly in.That's another long story - and how I met my friend Alvin Lofton.
I negotiated a settlement with my parents that allowed me to hang around the hotel ONLY after I went to school each day. Florence and Mary were super and waited with me until my dad picked me up each evening. And here I am ... 54 years later! Still hanging around after the show.
I didn't have a camera in those days. Some of you know the story. Diana was polite, but in her defense, I knocked on her door to ask her to sign my scrapbook (she did!). (How did I get her room number, you ask? The front desk gave it to me. The good ol' days before the world got scary!) As I knocked, she was coming out in her robe and curlers to get ice. She signed and was nice but definitely startled. Mary and Florence watched over me in the hotel lobby and were kind when they'd return from rehearsal. They invited me to one of the rehearsals or it might have been the taping? Much of it is a blur now, but I especially remember Florence not wanting to leave this crazy fan kid alone in the lobby at night.
I'm over the moon to see these photos. I must find the owner and buy prints. - Linda DiStefano
