Scherrie Payne was busy on Saturday, December 3rd 2022. After performing in her churches Christmas concert, she attended Ketty Lester's show at The Gardenia in Los Angeles, CA.
Here's a show review written by A. Scott Galloway: A part of my heart is still floating and the caverns of my memory banks are still vibrating from the wonderful, intimate cabaret concet I experienced last night at The Gardenia Club in West Hollywood seeing my dear new friend, Ms. KETTY LESTER, sharing her voice and songs... At 88 years young, the lady was absolutely beautiful and her delivery of the songs the epitome of inhabitation - she was completely at-one with the material. She opened with an apropos holiday medley of "The Christmas Song" & "I'll Be Home For Christmas." She serenaded us with her greatest hit, "Love Letters." And she had a blast channeling Louis Armstrong in a swingin' medley of "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" & "Route 66" - with insider backstories to boot!! But of the 13 songs she embodied, three truly arrested my soul's core: "Lonely People Do Foolish Things," "P.S. I Love You" and her finale, "Once Upon a Time." Savoring my chilled pinot, I was transported to melancholy head spaces of other times drinking her in on those... You know, Stevie Wonder was rumored to be coming to catch Ketty's act last night but did not make it. When I tell you - as I told Ketty and Scherrie Payne (who was in the house, thoroughly adoring and attentive) - it was Steveland's loss...and anyone else not present to receive the present of Ketty Lester live in holiday mode (make that rich, sweet a la mode). When next Ketty Lester graces The Gardenia, I will be sure to let you know. And I hope you can attend. Happy Holidays A. SCOTT GALLOWAY (December 5th 2022)
