Scherrie Payne & The Vandellas! Rosalind, Scherrie & Annette
My heart is heavy, yet so full, as I think of the beautiful and talented Rosalind Ashford-Holmes of Martha & The Vandellas.

When I joinedThe Supremes in 1973, somewhat later than her historic first run with Martha and the Vandellas, she welcomed me with a warm smile. Motown! We were family.

Through the years we shared many stages - Motown reunions, fairs, festivals etc…. Our groups’ last performances together were fittingly in Detroit at the famous Fox theater and Bert’s warehouse in 2019. Backstage was always my favorite part. We would laugh, take pictures, catch up on family and shared friends. Rosalind always carried herself with sweetness and grace.

Rosalind’s high voice floated on those backgrounds! She can be distinctly heard on those Martha and The Vandellas' hits including “Dancing in the Street,” “Quicksand,” “HeatWave" and "Nowhere to Run” People felt joy when listening to those records because she put joy into recording them.

Rosalind will be missed, she was truly loved worldwide!  Wishing her family, friends, fans and loved ones peace during this difficult time.

Rest now Rosalind, and sing with the Angels.
All my love, always,
Scherrie Payne

There are some friends you speak with daily, others weekly, and some only once in a while. Rosalind was one of those special friends who didn’t need constant communication to keep the friendship alive. We might not have spoken for a year, but whenever we did, it felt as though we had just picked up where we left off. We would slip right back into that same comfortable, familiar place we had always shared.“Girl, how long has it been?” “Wow! It’s been a while!”And then we were off, catching up on life, sharing what was happening, asking how we had been, and reminding each other how much we missed one another.

You see, Ros was the same person every time we spoke. She never changed. She was genuinely, authentically Ros. Kind-hearted, caring, and generous. She had a beautiful spirit that made you feel comfortable just being yourself.

But let’s talk about that fantastic soprano voice! Those high notes on “Heat Wave”—that was Ros! Those high notes on all of the Martha and the Vandellas’ hits—that was Rosalind doing what she did best. She had a powerful, distinctive soprano voice that was uniquely hers. A voice you recognized and never forgot.

When I moved to Detroit, Rosalind and I became roommates for a short while. She and her mother were so gracious to welcome me into their home. We had such a wonderful time getting to know each other better, and through Ros, I was introduced to so many of the Motown acts. Those are memories I will always cherish.

My friend Ros will forever be remembered for her years as a Vandella and for the music she shared with the world, but I will always remember her as my friend. That's what makes her loss so personal to me.
My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and all those who loved her.

From my heart,
Lynda Laurence ❤️

In loving memory of bob Mackie

Bob Mackie, the Emmy- and Tony-winning fashion designer and costumer, has died, according to a statement released on his Instagram account.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today,” it read. “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

Born Robert Gordon Mackie in Monterey Park, California, Mackie had one year of art school under his belt when he began work in the costume department at Paramount Studios, sketching for Frank Thompson (whose credits included Gentlemen Prefer Blondes). He went on to assist Ray Aghayan, a costumer at Paramount who would become Mackie’s partner for more than 50 years, until Aghayan’s death in 2011.

After a spell sketching for the costume designer Jean Louis, Mackie was tapped by the actress and dancer Mitzi Gaynor to design the wardrobe for her show in Las Vegas—thus beginning Mackie’s decades-long association with a parade of singular divas.

“When you’re designing for performers, you have to think about what does the audience want to see them look like—especially if they’re playing big theaters or stadiums,” Mackie told Vogue in 2024. Thus, the hallmarks of his eye-popping style: short, swingy, sometimes semisheer dresses resplendent with sequins, crystals, and feathers.
